About Us

yellow house; Women's Center

Founded in 1994, the Women’s Center serves as a resource for the university and surrounding community on gender-related and women’s issues; sponsors educational programs and events that raise awareness of women’s issues; and serves as an on-campus focal point for services for survivors, their friends and families. As a unit of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, we serve Virginia Tech students, faculty and staff. The Women's Center operates with a commitment to social justice and gender equity. We aim to use our platform for change, not only in voice and thought, but in action, resources, and support.

Our mission statement: To engage the VT community in creating an affirming and supportive environment in order to advance gender equity, including the centering of marginalized genders, through advocacy and education.

Our vision is: A Virginia Tech community where students, faculty and staff of all genders, sexualities, races, ethnicities, classes, abilities, ages:

  • are free to express all aspects of their identities
  • can succeed academically, professionally and personally
  • are free from gender- and power-based violence
  • are inspired to promote equity and challenge oppression

Our values: Women’s Center programs and services are rooted in principles of anti-oppression, anti-racism, inclusivity, intersectionality, feminism, trauma-informed care, and social justice. We see these values as a process, a practice, and a goal.

Our commitment: The staff of the Women’s Center will publish our annual activity reports and center-wide assessment reports in order to demonstrate the embodiment of these values in our day-to-day advocacy, education, and outreach work, as well as our individual commitment to ongoing professional and personal growth.  Additionally, we commit to revisiting our mission on a biennial basis to assess and consider ongoing feedback from our campus stakeholders, partners, clients, and constituencies.
